Superdad Rule 7: “Don’t expect more than you would give”
Little throwback to 2007. Here's a fun fact: I had the honor of being the first and still the only non-Chinese Shaolin warrior to coach at one of the temple training grounds. I worked with over 30 students in my class, including the odd Westerners here and there, but there was one special individual named Tian Ci. I took TC to the temple when he was just six years old, I cared, trained, fed and even bathed him; but unlike the other Kung fu students who on rest days would have to stay within the training grounds me and young TC embarked on magical adventures. We hiked deep into the mountains as I told story tell of the wonders of Shaolin and its history, camped in caves, practiced morning qi gong in the pagoda forest, and even traveled across China on 15-hour train rides to visit places like the forbidden palace. Take a look at the photo of TC at seven years old, with me at 19, wearing the same clothes and striking the same poses. It just goes to show that time, patience, and consistency can achieve incredible milestones. Different day, same sh*t.
In a remarkable turn of events, TC, now 22 years old, has taken over the reins at the Temple in London while I embark on new adventures through the tranquil valleys of China. It feels as though life has come full circle, with TC stepping into the role of a Superdad, not in the traditional sense of having his own child just yet (although that is something amazing that will happen in due time), but in the way he cares for his students, his peers, and most importantly, the next generation, represented by the promising individual, T.
